Proposed George Borrow Society Meeting in Tipperary 30 Sept-3 Oct 2008
Venue:
Base for meetings and excursion - Clonmel with visits to Cashel and Templemore
Plans for the programme are proceeding apace. Provisionally, we have in mind:
Tuesday, 30 September - reserved for travel. We shall aim to meet for drinks in a suitable
bar that evening.
A morning meeting in Clonmel on Wednesday, 1 October, with papers devoted to Borrow’s time in Ireland in
1816 and the social context. We hope to involve members of the local historical Society;
Wednesday afternoon - guided tour of Clonmel;
Wednesday evening - Borrow Society dinner;
Thursday, all day coach excursion from Clonmel to Templemore via Cashel (as Cashel is on the
direct road to Templemore Borrow could not have avoided passing through it although he does not mention it in
Lavengro). Morning visit to Cashel which has many sites of interest including the Rock of Cashel,
and the Bolton Library, which is in the Chapter House of the Protestant (Church of Ireland) Cathedral.
Lunch at Cashel. Afternoon visit to Templemore to the Police College which was formerly the barracks
where the West Norfolk Militia were billeted. (We are very grateful to the College for their special
permission for our visit.) There might not be enough time to climb the Devil’s Bit near Templemore but we
hope at least to see it.
Tuesday and Friday are reserved for travelling, but we know that some members are planning to extend their
stay either in advance of, or following, these dates.
Members interested to read up the background should note especially, apart from Ch. 16 of Lavengro
and Murtagh’s Tale at the end of The Romany Rye, Bulletins 10, 72-73; 18, 12-29 & 29-37; 20, 51-53; 34,
83-95. A reader of relevant material will be made available to participants.
Members and non-members who have not yet booked and would like to take part are asked to get in touch
with Dr Ridler at the address indicated. Please note that you will be responsible for your own travel
and accommodation arrangements.
